From RH Reality Check’s recent post about the Personhood Conference held in DC for the anniversary of Roe v. Wade:
Even more interesting, [Kristi Burton] seems to accept birth control, the most common form of which is an oral contraceptive, but opposes emergency contraception, something that is essentially the same hormonal drug in two different doses.
Burton’s the woman behind the Colorado amendment to define “personhood” as starting at fertilization. EC it effectively works by stopping or delaying ovulation. There is no proof that EC stops implantation after the egg is fertilized. In other words: EC DOES THE EXACT SAME THING AS ORAL BIRTH CONTROL. Ergo, EC doesn’t “kill a person,” if you choose to define “personhood” as Burton does. WTF. Do your research.
It’s annoying and stupid, but some part of me can’t help but think that if this is the best they can do, they are screwed in any long term way. It’s hard to take such a patently contradictory statement seriously. Of course, this requires people actually considering contraception as something to think about, but still. It’ll be a slow victory, but I’m optimistic.
